Heroes of Might and Magic II now available for modern RISC OS machines

An new version of turn-based fantasy strategy game Heroes of Might and Magic II is available from R-Comp Interactive, and can be purchased for £18.99 from !Store, or by popping along to the R-Comp stand at next week’s London Show. Here is the press release sent out by Andrew Rawnsley announcing the release:

RCI is pleased to announce that Heroes of Might and Magic 2 has returned to RISC OS after an extended absence (the original version wasn’t 32-bit compatible). The new version is aimed at 32-bit RISC OS 5 computers such as Pi, iMX6, 4te, Pinebook Pro, Titanium and others.

Heroes of Might and Magic 2 is a fantasy strategy game with RPG elements. Players recruit heroes and build castles, forging (small) armies out of different troops and creatures, then explore and conquer the various maps and story campaigns.

The game features excellent graphics and beautiful music – its soundtrack continues to receive praise to this day. It is widely considered to be one of the best games ever to land on RISC OS, and even one of the all time “greats” in gaming history.

Since we still have quite a few of the original game packs in our stockroom, we’re aiming to free up a bit of space with the new release. We’re releasing both the main game, and the Price of Loyalty expansion pack. The latter is accompanied by the Desecrated Lands map pack for even more HoMM2 goodness.

If you have the Price of Loyalty installed you also gain access to the map editor which can even create random maps for you to play for almost unlimited HoMM2 fun. The modern version is capable of test-playing these maps to ensure that they are properly balanced if you are playing multi-player.

The new version restores the animations and cut scenes that were shown as static images “back in the day”. Additionally it can play high quality music even on machines that don’t have CD drives (the original relied on the game CD audio tracks to play its music score).

We’ve also added a few extra features – maps can be installed / uninstalled by double clicking on them, and the large RAM capacity of modern machines is utilised to speed up gameplay transitions and music cues, for improved fluidity whilst playing (even from SD card).

Heroes of Might and Magic 2 (HoMM 2) is now available on !Store (look for it in the Apps folder of your computer) or by calling us on the usual R-Comp phone number. We’ll also be running a special deal on the game and its expansion pack at the London show.
